What ground slope do you need around a house?

What is the ideal slope to maintain around your home? The ground must fall away from the foundation, never toward it. The accepted rule in construction is a drop of about 15 cm over the first three metres, or a slope of close to 2%. Before the fall rains and the first freeze, it is the slope that decides whether water runs toward the street or pools against your walls. Poorly graded ground cancels out the work of even the best drainage system.

What is a positive slope?

A positive slope falls away as you move from the house. Water follows that descent and moves away from the foundation walls. A negative, or reverse, slope does the opposite: it brings water back toward the house, where it soaks into the ground and eventually loads the French drain and the walls. Slope is your basement’s first line of defence, even before the drain.

What slope should you actually aim for?

The ground should lose height over the first few metres around the house, at a rate of roughly 15 cm of drop over 3 metres. The difference looks minor to the eye, but when it is missing, it is enough to send water in the wrong direction.

Continuity matters as much as the number. The slope has to exist all the way around the house, not just at the front, because a single flat corner is enough to hold water. Soil type also plays a role: a well-drained lawn or planting bed sheds water better than compacted ground or pavers whose joints are no longer maintained.

How do you recognize a reverse slope?

A reverse slope is not always visible at first glance. It reveals itself during and after heavy rain. Here are the signs to watch for this fall.

A single one of these signs does not condemn your property. It still deserves attention, though, before the ground freezes and locks the problem in until spring.

How slope and the drain work together

People often assume the French drain takes care of everything on its own. The slope manages water at the surface, while the drain manages the water that still reaches the bottom of the foundation. If the slope brings water back toward the house, the drain receives a volume it was never meant to handle, and it will eventually overflow even in perfect condition. “You can install a brand-new drain, perfectly sized — but if the ground slopes toward the foundation, you’re working against gravity. The slope is the first line of defence, even before the drain. What to do if your ground slopes toward the house

A reverse slope can be corrected, and fall is a good time to do it before the first freezes.

  1. Identify the areas that are flat or sloping toward the house. One rainfall is enough: simply watch where the water goes.
  2. Check the downspout outlets first. A downspout that discharges at the base of the wall can mimic a reverse slope, and a simple downspout extension sometimes solves the problem at little cost.
  3. Build up the ground and rebuild the slope on the problem side. Adding soil to recreate the drop is often simpler than people expect, as long as the problem originates at the surface.
  4. Have specialists assess the situation if the moisture persists.
